In addition to the many skin care treatments available today – chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Thermage and lasers, including IPL and Fraxel – add another intriguing option: dermal rolling.
An alternative to in-office procedures, this at-home option is “simple, safe, effective, natural and affordable,” says Dr. Lance Setterfield, of Acacia Dermacare. Essentially, dermal rolling helps make skin “healthy by using essential topical nutrients to improve acne, rosacea, pigment and wrinkles. By creating tiny openings in the top layer of the skin, up to 80-per-cent-more nutrients can penetrate to the layers where they are most needed,” Setterfield explains.
Similar to laser in that it triggers the healing process, the difference is that while heat from lasers coagulates proteins needed for healing, dermal rolling does not, so the collagen formed is more natural.
“Over time patients should get the same results, or better, because they are able to roll more frequently at home than laser in a treatment facility,” Setterfield says, noting that “no one has said they could not roll due to discomfort. It is truly an exciting and effective alternative.”
